Lahore to Islamabad is 375 km on the M-2 motorway, about four hours of driving. One seat in a shared car costs about Rs 2,915, and driving your own Honda City burns about Rs 10,940 of petrol before the toll. The rest of this page is how those figures are worked out and how to choose between them.
Which road: the M-2 or the GT Road
There are two ways up, and they disagree about distance. The M-2 motorway is the one almost everyone takes: 375 km, a fixed speed limit, service areas at Bhera and Kallar Kahar, and a toll paid at the exit. The GT Road (N-5) through Gujranwala, Wazirabad, Jhelum and Rawalpindi is shorter on paper. We measured it at 293 km, with 3 h 58 min of non-stop driving if the road were empty, which it never is. Every town on it is a slowdown, and trucks set the pace between them.
So the motorway is longer in kilometres and faster in hours. Both numbers on this page are true; they are different roads. Our road distance table lists the shortest road for 435 city pairs and says so.
What the trip costs, four ways
| How you go | What you pay | What it includes |
|---|---|---|
| One seat in a shared car | Rs 2,915 | Your seat only; the driver fills the others |
| Your own Honda City (13 km/l) | Rs 10,940 petrol | Petrol for one way, toll not included |
| Your own Suzuki Mehran (15 km/l) | Rs 9,480 petrol | Petrol for one way, toll not included |
| Your own Suzuki Alto (18 km/l) | Rs 7,900 petrol | Petrol for one way, toll not included |
The seat figure is the one on our Lahore to Islamabad route page: the whole car's fare for 375 km, plus 10% for the intercity run, divided across four seats. The petrol figures use today's PSO price from our petrol tracker and move with it. We do not publish motorway toll or bus fares, because we have no reliable source that stays current, so check the NHA toll and the bus company before you count on either.
Read the table the way a family would. Alone, a seat costs less than the petrol for your own car on this distance. Two people driving together split one car's petrol and still pay more each than a seat. Only with four people in a small car does the petrol per head drop near or below a seat's price, and the toll then comes on top.
How long it really takes
Plan on about four hours on the M-2 door to door from central Lahore to Blue Area, more with a stop at Bhera or Kallar Kahar. The part people underestimate is the city at each end. Getting from Johar Town or DHA to the Ravi toll plaza can take 40 minutes at 8am, and Islamabad's Srinagar Highway is slow in the evening rush. Leaving Lahore before 7am, or after 10am, is the single biggest time saving on this trip.
Carpooling between Lahore and Islamabad
A lot of people search for a "Lahore to Islamabad carpool WhatsApp group", and those groups exist because the need is real: students going home for the weekend, people working in Islamabad with families in Lahore, a seat in a car that is going anyway. What a group cannot tell you is who the driver is, whether the car is the one in the message, or what happens if the price changes at the pickup.
On Shareide the same idea runs through the app. Every driver's CNIC and documents are checked before they are approved, the car and its number plate are on their profile, and the price is agreed in the app before anyone leaves, so nothing is argued about at the roadside.
How booking a seat works on Shareide
- Open City to City, choose Lahore to Islamabad, the date and how many seats you need.
- The app suggests a per-seat price for the route. You can keep it, raise it, or go down to 85% of it.
- Drivers going that way see your trip. Each one accepts your price or offers a higher one.
- You choose a driver by their photo, rating, rides and car, and the seat is booked.
Cancelling 45 minutes or more before departure is free. Post the trip a day ahead if you can: it gives drivers who are not online right now the time to see it.
