Does Your Car Need It?

Only if the manufacturer asks for it. High-octane fuel resists knocking under higher compression, which is why turbocharged and high-compression engines specify it; the owner manual, or the sticker inside the fuel flap, says which your car wants. In an engine built for ordinary petrol, octane delivers no extra power and no better mileage, so the difference is simply spent.

What the difference is: Rs. 16.70 a litre, which is about Rs. 128.46 more per 100 km in a car doing 13 km a litre (Rs. 3,192.31 against Rs. 3,063.85). On a 40 km round-trip commute over 22 working days that is roughly Rs. 1,130 a month. Work it out for your own car and route with the fuel cost calculator, or see what the same commute costs shared in the commute cost report.
