Those are the ones people drive and come back from in a day, which is exactly where a car with three empty seats is hardest to justify. The nearest of the four biggest cities is Islamabad at 108 km, 1h 24m of non-stop driving.

Term time is what fills these roads. The Ayub Medical Complex and the campuses around the city draw students and staff up from Haripur and Islamabad and down from Mansehra, and in summer the Karakoram Highway adds a second, entirely different kind of traffic heading north past the town rather than into it. The two barely overlap, which is why the road can feel empty and impossible in the same week.

Hill roads change the arithmetic of a commute. The distance to Islamabad looks modest next to a Punjab corridor, and the non-stop drive time below is longer than that distance suggests, because the road climbs and bends rather than running straight.
