Smog Season Is Coming: How to Commute Through Bad Air

Every autumn, Lahore's air becomes a health story. Here's how to reduce your own exposure on the commute — and why fewer vehicles carrying more people is part of the fix.

Smog Season Is Coming: How to Commute Through Bad Air

Lahore's smog season arrives with the same reliability as the monsoon, usually from late October through the winter, and every year the same conversation happens about crop burning, industry, and traffic. Whatever the split between causes, the commuter's problem is immediate and personal: you spend one to two hours a day breathing the worst air in the city, at the roadside, at peak concentration.

Why the commute is the worst exposure of your day

Pollutant concentrations are highest close to traffic and during peak hours. Sitting in a jam on a main road at 6 PM means breathing air far worse than the city-wide average reported that day. Open-air travel — motorcycle, rickshaw, walking beside traffic — takes the full dose with no filter at all.

What actually reduces your exposure

  1. Travel enclosed on the worst days. A closed vehicle with recirculation on is a meaningful improvement over open-air travel — see the bike versus shared seat comparison.
  2. Shift your timing. Late morning is usually better than early morning or evening peak; smog often settles worst overnight and at dusk.
  3. Use recirculation, not fresh air intake, when stuck in dense traffic. Switch back once you are moving in cleaner air.
  4. A proper mask, if you must be outside. A cloth mask does nothing for fine particulates; an N95-type mask does.
  5. Cut the number of trips. Batching errands into one trip on a bad-air day is exposure avoided, not just fuel saved.
  6. Protect the vulnerable specifically. Children, elderly relatives, asthmatics, and pregnant women should not be doing optional open-air trips on high-AQI days.

Why vehicle occupancy is part of the fix

Traffic is one of the contributors to urban smog, and the traffic that matters is measured in vehicles, not people. A corridor moving 300 people in 250 cars produces far more roadside pollution than the same 300 people in 90 shared vehicles. That is the same arithmetic behind congestion and fuel imports, applied to air quality — set out in our carbon footprint piece and traffic reduction piece.

No individual choice fixes Lahore's air. But a commuter switching from a solo vehicle to a shared seat reduces both their own exposure and their contribution, which is more than most available options offer.

If you drive for a living

Drivers get the highest exposure of anyone on the road — all day, every day, in traffic. Keep the cabin filter changed, use recirculation in dense traffic, keep windows up on bad days, and take breaks away from the roadside rather than beside it. The driver health guide has more.

Frequently asked questions

When is smog season in Lahore?

Typically late October through winter, with the worst readings in November and December.

Does a car actually protect me from smog?

A closed cabin with recirculation and a maintained filter reduces exposure compared with open-air travel. It is not filtered clean air, but it is a real improvement.

Do cloth masks help against smog?

Not meaningfully for fine particulates. An N95-type mask is what makes a difference.

What is the best commute option on a very high AQI day?

An enclosed shared vehicle, timed outside peak hours, with as few separate trips as possible.
