Mass transit is unbeatable on cost along a corridor. Shared rides reach the streets it can't. Treating them as rivals is how commuters end up overpaying.
Every discussion of urban transport in Pakistan eventually turns into an argument: build mass transit, or let private platforms handle it. For an actual commuter deciding how to get to work tomorrow, that argument is beside the point. The two do different jobs, and the cheapest commute usually uses both.
What mass transit is unbeatable at
- Cost per kilometre along a corridor. Subsidised fares are not something road transport can match.
- Immunity to traffic, where the track or lane is dedicated.
- Moving very large numbers of people through a narrow strip of city.
- Predictability at peak hours, which is when predictability is worth most.
What it cannot do
- Reach your street. Corridors serve corridors; cities are not built along one line.
- Cover off-peak and late hours at usable frequency.
- Handle luggage, small children, or elderly passengers comfortably.
- Adapt to a route that changes. Fixed infrastructure is fixed.
What shared rides are for
Shared rides solve the shape problem. That makes them the natural fit for connection legs, off-peak hours, cross-city routes that no corridor serves, and any trip where door-to-door matters.
What they cannot do is beat a subsidised fare on a long corridor trip. Any honest comparison says so.
The combination, in numbers
Consider a 14 km commute where 10 km follows a metro corridor. Doing the whole thing by road costs the most. Doing it entirely by transit means two long walks, which many people simply will not do in July heat or during smog season. Metro for the 10 km plus a shared seat for the 4 km of connections is usually the cheapest option anyone will actually stick to — and the sticking is the part that matters, because a commute plan you abandon in week two saves nothing.
Why cities need both
Pakistan's congestion problem is a vehicle-count problem. Mass transit removes vehicles along corridors; higher-occupancy shared rides remove them everywhere else. The failure mode for a city is having transit that nobody can reach, so everyone drives a private car to a station car park — or does not use it at all.
