Vehicle Insurance in Pakistan: What Drivers Should Actually Understand
Insurance is the document most drivers understand least. Here's what the cover types mean, what a claim actually requires, and the clause that catches ride-hailing drivers.
Insurance is the vehicle document drivers understand least and discover most painfully. For anyone earning from their vehicle, the difference between having cover and having the right cover is the difference between a bad week and a lost livelihood.
This is a general guide, not legal or financial advice — read your own policy, because the wording is what decides a claim.
The two kinds of cover
Third-party liability
Covers damage or injury you cause to others. It does nothing for your own vehicle. It is the cheaper option and the legal minimum concept in most frameworks — but for a driver whose income depends on the car being drivable, it leaves the biggest risk uncovered.
Comprehensive
Covers your own vehicle as well — accident damage, and usually theft, subject to the policy's terms. More expensive, and for a vehicle you earn from, generally the one that matches the risk. Newer and financed vehicles are usually required to carry it anyway.
The clause that catches ride-hailing drivers
Many private-vehicle policies are written for private use. Using the vehicle commercially — carrying paying passengers — can fall outside what the policy covers, which means a claim can be declined at the worst possible moment. If you earn from the vehicle, tell your insurer and get cover that reflects the actual use. It costs more than a private policy and less than an uncovered accident.
What to check before you buy
- Is commercial or ride-hailing use covered? The single most important question for a driver.
- What is excluded? Read the exclusions before the benefits; that is where claims are actually decided.
- What is the deductible? A cheap premium with a large deductible may not be usable for the damage you actually get.
- How are claims processed, and how fast? A vehicle sitting in a workshop awaiting approval is lost income every day.
- Is the insurer's workshop network usable where you live? An approved network in another city is not much help.
What a claim needs from you
- Photographs at the scene — the damage, both vehicles, the position on the road, and the surroundings.
- Police documentation where the incident requires it.
- Prompt notification. Most policies have a reporting window; missing it can be fatal to the claim.
- Your own documents in order — a valid licence and registration at the time of the incident. An expired licence undermines everything else.
The documents checklist is worth working through for exactly this reason.
Insurance is one part of protecting income
The others are maintenance and driving habits: a well-maintained vehicle has fewer incidents, and a rested driver has fewer still — see the maintenance checklist and driver health guide. Insurance covers what those two fail to prevent; it is not a substitute for either.
Frequently asked questions
Is vehicle insurance mandatory in Pakistan?
Third-party liability is a legal requirement in principle, and comprehensive cover is generally required for financed vehicles. Verify current requirements for your province and vehicle category.
Does a normal private policy cover ride-hailing?
Often not. Private-use policies may exclude carrying paying passengers, so declare commercial use to your insurer rather than discovering the exclusion during a claim.
Is comprehensive cover worth it for an older car?
It depends on the vehicle's value versus the premium. For a car you earn from daily, being off the road is a cost worth weighing alongside repair cost.
What should I do immediately after an accident?
Ensure everyone is safe, photograph everything, get police documentation if required, and notify your insurer within the policy's reporting window.
