The Driver Documents Checklist: Nothing Expired, Everything to Hand

Every document on this list costs a small fee to renew and a full working day to be caught without. Here's the complete list, and when to deal with each.

The Driver Documents Checklist: Nothing Expired, Everything to Hand

Nobody loses income because a renewal fee was too high. They lose it because a document expired quietly and they found out at a checkpoint, or during an insurance claim, or when a platform suspended their account. Paperwork is the cheapest part of this job to get right and the most expensive to ignore.

The core documents

  1. CNIC — valid and not expired. Everything else is verified against it.
  2. Driving licence of the correct category for your vehicle. Renew before expiry, not after; a lapsed licence affects insurance claims as well as legality.
  3. Vehicle registration in order and matching the vehicle you actually drive. Transfers after a purchase must be completed, not left pending.
  4. Token tax paid and up to date.
  5. Fitness certification where required for your vehicle category.
  6. Insurance, and specifically cover that reflects commercial use if you carry paying passengers — see the insurance guide.
  7. Route permit where required. Punjab has brought ride-hailing drivers under route permit rules — see the route permit guide.
  8. City-level registration where it applies. Islamabad requires ride-hailing driver registration with the district administration — see the Islamabad guide.

Platform verification, separately

Shareide verifies CNIC, driving licence, and vehicle registration, plus a background review, before a driver can accept their first ride, and requires a minimum rating to keep driving. That is a platform requirement and does not replace any legal one — see how verification works.

Practical habits that prevent lost days

  • Write every expiry date in one place and set a reminder a month ahead. This one habit prevents most paperwork problems.
  • Keep digital copies on your phone as well as originals in the vehicle. Most roadside delays are about documents that exist but are not accessible.
  • Renew in the quiet season, not the week it expires. Offices are busier at month-end and around deadlines.
  • Keep name and address consistent across CNIC, licence, and registration. Mismatches cause delays at exactly the wrong moment.
  • Complete transfers immediately when buying or selling a vehicle. A pending transfer is a problem waiting for a date.

What it costs to get this wrong

A day off the road for paperwork is a day's earnings gone, plus the time spent sorting it. An expired licence can undermine an insurance claim after an accident. A registration mismatch can mean a suspended platform account. Every one of those costs several multiples of the renewal fee it came from.

Frequently asked questions

How often does a driving licence need renewal?

Renewal periods vary by licence type and province. Check the expiry printed on your own licence and renew ahead of it rather than relying on a general rule.

Do I need a commercial licence to drive on a platform?

Requirements depend on your vehicle category. Verify with your provincial licensing authority rather than assuming your existing category is sufficient.

What documents do I need to sign up as a driver?

CNIC, driving licence, and vehicle registration for verification. See the signup guide for the process.

What happens if a document expires while I am driving on the platform?

Your legal position and your platform access are both affected. Renew before expiry — the cost of a lapse is measured in lost working days.
