Murree and the Galiyat: Planning a Weekend Trip That Actually Works

Murree is the default weekend escape for Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and much of Punjab, which is exactly why it can be miserable. Peak-weekend traffic on the Expressway, a full Mall Road, and nowhere to park turn a two-hour drive into most of a day. The trip is worth doing — it just rewards planning far more than spontaneity.

Timing is the whole game

• Leave very early or go midweek. Departing Islamabad before 7 AM on Saturday is a different trip from leaving at 10 AM.

The Galiyat — Nathia Gali, Ayubia, Dunga Gali, Thandiani — are cooler, greener, and considerably less crowded than Mall Road. How to get there

For a group, one vehicle for the whole trip is usually the practical answer — you keep it for local movement between viewpoints, which matters when public transport up there is thin. 1. Underestimating the temperature drop. It can be 15 degrees cooler than Rawalpindi, and colder after dark.
2. Assuming they will find accommodation on arrival. On a busy weekend you will not, or you will pay heavily.
3. Driving a hill road for the first time in fog. Narrow, steep, unforgiving, and busy with vehicles doing exactly the same thing.
4. Forgetting motion sickness. Winding roads plus children plus a full breakfast is a known combination.
5. No cash. Card acceptance thins out quickly outside the main bazaars.

Packing for a hill weekend

Warm layers even in summer, rain protection during monsoon, proper shoes if you plan to walk any track, chargers and a power bank, some cash, and any medication you need.
